How Deep Is Hudson Bay

Aside from beingness the winter hunting grounds of Manitoba's polar bears, the Hudson Bay has a pretty interesting history all on it's own.

one. Named for Henry Hudson

Henry Hudson discovered the bay in 1611 during his search for the Northwest Passage. When he pushed his crew to continue their search for the passage after spending a harsh winter on the shores of the bay, the coiffure mutinied and set him afloat in a pocket-size boat on the bay. He was never heard from again.

2. Hudson Bay's h2o is not office of Manitoba

Although the shoreline in Churchill is office of Manitoba'due south territory, once you're in the water, y'all're considered to exist in Nunavut.

3. 2d largest Bay in the world

The Hudson Bay encompasses 1,230,000 square kilometers, making it the second largest bay in the world after the Bay of Bengal (2,172,000 foursquare kilometers).

four. Sparsely populated

The Hudson Bay coast is sparsely populated, with only a dozen communities along information technology's shores. Many of these were once trading posts for the Hudson's Bay Visitor, founded in the 17^thursday century.

v. Hudson'southward Bay Visitor

The Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), famous for their iconic Signal Blankets and their function in starting the fur trade industry in Canada, is named after this big body of water. HBC was incorporated on May 2nd 1670 and is the oldest corporation in North America (and is among the oldest in the world).

Bonus: Hudson Bay is the summertime domicile of upwards to fifty,000 beluga whales!

Each July and August an estimated fifty,000 beluga whales drift south into river estuaries that menstruation into the Hudson Bay. The whales use this estuaries equally their grounds to feed, molt (shed skin), and give birth. The Churchill River estuary has approximately 3,000 beluga whales that swim through its waters in the summer.
